Time Off Benefits

We all need time away from work for a variety of reasons throughout the year. Sometimes it’s easy to plan time off (like vacation days). Other times something happens unexpectedly, like an injury or a death in the family. A variety of policies are here to help you manage your time off needs.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
PTO is available to eligible employees immediately upon hire.

  • You can use your PTO hours when you are away from work due to an illness or injury and for vacations, personal time, holidays and short-term disability waiting periods.
  • You earn (“accrue”) PTO throughout the year based on hours worked. Unused PTO accruals roll over from year to year, subject to a maximum. Your maximum is based on your years of service.
  • If your PTO balance reaches your maximum, you will not accrue any more PTO until you lower your balance below the maximum.
  • You may choose to donate PTO hours to an employee who is experiencing a medical emergency or major disaster, based on PTO policy.
  • During annual Open Enrollment, you may elect to “cash in” some of your PTO hours, based on PTO policy.

More details are in our Paid Time Off Policy (HR.093). To access policies, use the “Policy Tech” link on The Hub.

Leaves of Absence
A variety of leaves are available to help when you experience a personal illness or injury, add to your family or need time away from work to care for a loved one. Here are highlights of some key policies. Other leaves may be available for military, education and personal needs.

  • Paid Family Leave: You can take up to six weeks of paid time away from work to care for an eligible family member to care for an eligible family member with a serious health condition or to bond with a newly born/placed child. Benefits-eligible full- and part-time employees with at least one year of service are eligible to take family leave.
  • Bereavement Leave: You can take up to five paid days away from work in the event of the death of an immediate family member and up to three days for an extended family member.
  • Paid Volunteer Time (new): You can take up to four hours of paid time away from work each year to volunteer in the community.

For more details, see the applicable Human Resources policies, available in the Total Rewards section of The Hub.

You can get:

  • Counseling for personal concerns such as stress, parenting, work-life balance and more. (Includes up to seven free counseling sessions per year, per event, for you and each of your household members.)
  • Concierge-type services to help make day-to-day life easier, such as planning a child’s birthday party, finding a nanny, a home cleaning service and more.
  • Referrals for personal, legal and financial services for you and your family.

Family Care Services

OU Health is changing child/elder care vendors in 2025. Please watch for future communication.

In the meantime, remember… if you enrolled in the dependent care flexible spending account (FSA):

You can use your pre-tax money in this FSA to pay for services to take care of your child (under age 13) and/or an elder who is your dependent for income tax purposes. (These funds can only be used for eligible dependent care expenses, not healthcare expenses.)

For more information about the dependent care FSA, visit “Flexible Spending Accounts” in the HEALTH section.
